- W324178196 abstract "Conventional livestock production systems can be very diverse and this diversity is influenced by the economic, geographic, environmental, and cultural factors. Conventional inputs for direct use in ruminant production include many types of plant feeds, industrial by-products, feed additives, drugs, and a variety of cleaning and sanitizing compounds. Conventional management practices range from traditional grazing systems to intensive feedlot operations. Organic livestock regulations differ from conventional ones because the use of antibiotics, hormones, and growth promoters is not allowed. Also, most organic guidelines require the access to pasture or free range for animals. While there is still some disagreement about details among different national standards, organic livestock production in most countries is based on very similar principles. Organic systems are largely driven by a holistic philosophy, but the sole objective of some low input farms is an economic benefit for the producer. There is need to conduct highly controlled farm experiments in which extensive analysis would identify the underlying mechanisms behind the effect of specific practices. In particular, current organic practices and their implications for pathogen prevalence need to be evaluated." @default.
