- W324690695 abstract "There are simple, cheap, and easy ways to be a greener teacher even before you start changing your curriculum. These low-hanging fruit are small changes you can make in your classroom and your behavior. For example, turning the lights off in an unoccupied classroom is something many of us already do. It costs nothing, requires little time and planning, saves the school money, models sustainable behavior for students, and conserves energy and natural resources. I have found that, in many schools, the science teachers are leaders in (and the best models of) environmentally sustainable behavior: We are the community members who have been grabbing these low-hanging fruit for years. The key is to bring the entire school community into this endeavor of green teaching. In my experience, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get everyone on board is by demonstrating that this process has a relatively simple first step--low-hanging fruit abound in every classroom. Let's focus on just a few in the categories of energy, paper, and the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Energy * Turn off as many unnecessary lights as possible. Light only those areas that are needed at the time. Maximize natural lighting in your classroom and office. * After school, make sure all equipment is turned off and unplugged. Electronic balances, for example, suck energy even when they are turned off. To measure energy use and efficiency, buy an energy-usage monitor (approximately $30) and attach it to your balance, hot plate, or incubator. Involve students in some calculations with the collected data! * Take your class outside. Paper * Recycle paper and encourage students to do the same. Place a well-labeled recycling bin for paper wherever there is a garbage bin in your classroom. Putting the bins next to each other minimizes contamination of recycling with garbage, and vice versa. * Collect paper for reuse. A high percentage of paper is used only on one side. Make a simple collection box for 8.5 x11 in sheets of paper that are blank on one side; this will keep them flat and ready for reuse. This is particularly useful for chemistry and physics classes that do practice problems in class. * Request or require that certain assignments are completed on used paper. A lot of school paperwork is not formal correspondence and can easily be completed on once-used paper. You can also require this for informal assignments completed in class. * Reduce paper usage by using electronic communication when possible. Computers, in spite of presenting ecological problems because of toxic components, can revolutionize your school's dependence on paper. Post your syllabus and other class documents on your course webpage. Require your students to submit assignments electronically. Reduce, reuse, recycle * Buy classroom products with minimal packaging to reduce waste. …" @default.
