- W32604631 abstract "Summary From all the methods used by Humanity to obtain common salt (rock salt mining; harvesting of salt crusts spontaneously formed in lakes, seas or sources; boiling of brine and solar evaporation salinas) there is one that can be considered unique of the Iberian Peninsula within Europe: inland salinas. This type of salina shares with the coastal ones the feature of using solar radiation and wind to evaporate the brine, but it does so far away from any sea. Only in Spain and Portugal hundreds of these facilities have been in operation and their workers were a unique and unrepeated combination of farmers, miners and industrial workers. Within the territory of today's Castile - La Mancha there used to be around fifty such salinas along History. There were also rock salt mines and some brackish lagoons were exploited, too, all of which are inventoried here. Since a few years ago, the gradual abandonment of the salt making activity has ruined the premises and the landscape. This is what we find today in these places: A ruined saltscape." @default.
