- W326184090 abstract "Nanostructured coatings offer a number of attractive properties and attributes that have generated considerable interest for both military and industrial applications. In particular, results showing improved wear resistance and toughness over conventional coatings are reported. These improvements are the result of several mechanisms, including refinement of the grain size for metals and their composites, and the presence of nanopores for ceramics. Optimizing the coating for each type of material revolves around two key factors: feedstock powder and spray process. This chapter discusses the important aspects of both the feedstock powder and spray process in meeting the goal of enhancing the wear properties of nanostructured coatings. Comparisons against conventional coatings of the same material will be presented, and some examples of current and potential applications will be provided. As will be seen, there are a number of applications in the military, mining, nuclear and medical fields where nanostructured coatings could offer protection against wear modes such as corrosive abrasion, corrosive erosion and high-temperature sputter erosion." @default.
