- W326192740 abstract "IRAN Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope, by Shirin Ebadi with Azadeh Moaveni. New York: Random House, 2006. xvi + 216 pages. Index to p. 272. $24.95. Reviewed by Geneive Abdo The unstated purpose of Shirin Ebadi's recently released memoir, Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope is clearly to expose details of the Iranian regime's postrevolutionary history that conform to Western perceptions about the Islamic republic. These perceptions, conveyed primarily through Ebadi's narrative of a struggling lawyer in Iran, have been recycled in various forms by authors, pundits, and journalists since Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 created the first modern Islamic state: While the government might boast of allowing more women access to higher education, the imposition of Islamic law, in fact, took women backwards by hundreds of years; the Iranian government is one of the most oppressive in contemporary history; and all of this is made possible because extremist, pre-modernist clerics took power and imposed absolutist interpretations of the Islamic sources. So what then is new in this memoir, compact with conclusions that have been debated, bemoaned, and served up as the basis of the United States' foreign policy toward Iran over the last 27 years? Very little, aside from the storyteller's eyewitness account and the details she brings to a narrative etched long ago into the world's historical memory. In the publication of yet another book that reaffirms conventional wisdom, an important issue must be raised: To what degree does this narrative reflect the highly complex realities of contemporary Iran? Without access to this relatively closed country, should the outside world accept as fact the black and white portraits created by dissidents such as Ebadi? This is the question that should be part of the public debate, as Iran greatly expands its influence in Lebanon and Iraq and through its nuclear program. Ebadi uses as the thread throughout the book her legal career to describe her plight, and by extension, that of all educated, professional Iranian women. Her first crisis came shortly after the revolution when her shortlived career as Iran's first female judge ended abruptly after she was eventually demoted to a secretarial position in the court. The clerics running the government decided that a woman could not be a judge, or for that matter hold any high position in the judicial system. This demotion set off a series of events in her life over the next two decades that caused problems in her marriage, posed difficulties in raising two daughters through Iraq's missile attacks on the Iranian capital during eight years of war with Saddam Husayn, and eventually inspired Ebadi to take up law again, this time as a champion for children and victims of the regime's oppression. …" @default.
