- W326233446 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter describes the effect of local fuel concentration on reheat jet pipe vibrations. It describes a series of engine and rig tests that were carried out on altitude and sea-level test beds to investigate pressure vibrations that occurred in the jet pipe of a pure turbojet engine fitted with a maximum boost reheat system. Certain control system failures allowed the reheat combustion zone to be overfuelled beyond its design fuel/air ratio. The effect of this overfuelling was to set up in the jet pipe a low-frequency pressure vibration that was identified as being the fundamental longitudinal mode for the overall jet pipe from turbine exhaust to the nozzle. The frequency of this pressure vibration coincided with that of the natural torsional frequency of the engine LP shaft, and as a result, alternating torsional stresses would be set up in this shaft. It is possible to excite longitudinal pressure waves in a reheated jet pipe, the amplitude of which is a function of the local fuel/air ratio at the plane of the reheat gutters for a wide range of mean jet-pipe pressures and with varying types of injector and injection distances." @default.
