- W327022335 abstract "John Clare: The Shepherd's Calendar. Ed. by TIM CHILCOTT. Manchester: Carcanet. 2006. xxxii + 234 pp. £14.95. Tim Chilcott's splendid new edition of The Shepherd's Calendar builds productively on his previous contributions to Clare studies: combining an innovative approach to presenting Clare's work (somewhat similar to that used by him to such good effect in 1999's John Clare: The Living Year), with a steadfast defence of John Taylor's role in putting together the volume published in Clare's lifetime. By restoring, at least in part, the text actually read by Clare's contemporaries, Chilcott does us an invaluable service, and one which urgently needs replicating for the other lifetime publications. All too often, the original contexts of Clare's work have been overlooked, and in order to understand how his poetry was originally received it is vital to look again at the ways in which it was presented to the public. Clare's own imitations of printed books in his earliest manuscripts-the carefully drawn mock-title pages, and even, on occasion, the very layout of the texts themselves-testify to his fascination with the printed word. In a series of 'Hints & Corrections' in PMS A3, for instance, he advises: 'Explanatory Head Lines (as in Bloomfleld) to principal pieces would (as I think) be an advantage-this is suggested-you do as you please-'. Here we see evidence of a writer eagerly anticipating how his poems will appear on the page; but also an avid reader well acquainted with the conventions followed in books of poetry. What is also apparent is Clare's willingness to defer to his publisher with regard to the poems, a stance often, though by no means always, adopted elsewhere. None of this is to deny the importance of the manuscript versions printed in the Clarendon Press edition of Clare's poetry. These remain essential for anyone wanting to get a proper sense of his achievements; yet it is surely short-sighted to always privilege these at the expense of texts that the poet himself saw in print. Chilcott's edition of The Shepherd's Calendar solves this dilemma by providing the versions Clare submitted to Taylor for publication on facing pages. This device works very well, and allows us to see instantly how much was cut from certain months. (Two appendices give us Clare's first version of 'July', impatiently rejected by Taylor as 'a descriptive Catalogue in rhyming Prose of all the Occupations of the Village People, scarcely one Feature of which has not been pictured before by you', and a table collating the six extant versions of October'). …" @default.
