• W32754807 abstract "I am impressed with the fact that the Reference Services Division proved this last year to be the fastest growing Division in the Association. We moved up to a membership of approximately 4,500, an almost 18% growth over our previous annual membership and managed with that growth to startle most of the old timers in ALA headquarters. A good part of that growth was due directly to the divisional publica tion, RQ. RQ was conceived years ago while I was a member of the Pub lications Committee as a slim newsletter to keep a couple thousand mem bers of the Division posted on divisional activities. As some of you will remember it started out both thin and slowly but with a succession of more and more aggressive editors it has reached the level of a professional jour nal which clearly is an influence in the field. Under the direction of the current, aggressive and controversial editor, it is making even more of a mark in the field. Just how much of a mark I had a reminder of early in the Fall when the first issue of the journal to appear during my presidential term included a bitter continuation of a running fight between a critic and my own employer. Flying feathers were appar ent for a few months and with a continuation of the argument in the let ters column in our journal feathers are still with us. RQ has helped the growth of the Division but more important is the fact that within the Division there is a willingness on the part of some two hundred members to take part in committee activity in one or another area to extend the interests of the Division and to attempt to make permanent contributions to our profession. In this kind of a round-up I can't attempt to identify all 18 committees, what they are doing and what they have done, but I would like to men tion a sampling of the activity. Your own Julia Schwartz has just assumed the chairmanship of the Cooperative Reference Services Committee of the Division. With the new national interest in financing cooperative services and with some changes in membership in a committee, which hasn't ac complished much in the past, the Division has hopes that under Julia's di rection this important area will gain the attention it deserves. The Chapters Committee, currently under the direction of Walter Allen of Ohio, should be of interest to this group. During the course of this year that committee has surveyed the state library associations with a curiosity as to why the Division has at the present time only ten chapters. The tenth (Texas) was welcomed this year and the eleventh (Minnesota) is currently trying to file an application. The Chapters Committee was concerned and" @default.
