- W327561567 abstract "Publisher Summary The remogenic doses of harmaline increase unit discharge and metabolic activity in the inferior olive (IO) of the cat. Intoxication by 3-acetylpyridine selectively destroys the neurons of the IO and, consequently, deprives Purkinje cells of their climbing fibres. The pharmacological destruction of the IO by acetylpyridine suppresses harmaline tremor in the rat. The degree of activity within neuronal aggregates is proportional to its glucose consumption and is revealed by radioautography using 14C 2-deoxyglucose. This chapter describes an experiment in which the local glucose consumption of the olivo-cerebello-nuclear circuit was studied in four groups of rats : (1) three normal control rats, (2) three rats given the tremogenic doses of harmaline, 15 mg/kg, (3) nine rats with the pharmacological destruction of the IO, three hours and a half to thirty days before study, and (4) nine rats given the tremogenic doses of harmaline, three hours and a half to thirty days after the pharmacological destruction of the IO. In the experiment, the cerebellar cortex of the control group of animals showed low radioactivity in the white matter, while the granular, molecular, and the Purkinje cell layers showed almost uniform radioactivity with the granule cells somewhat more intensely marked." @default.
