- W327719067 abstract "This report presents the results of 17 coal liquefaction experiments done by Gulf Research and Development Company under Subcontract No. DOE-TPSU-GRDC-40784-224 from the Pennsylvania State University (PSU). This is the final report for the above subcontract. The chief objective was to determine liquefaction yields for three low sulfur/low ash coals, three high sulfur/high ash coals, and nine 50:50 mixtures of these coals. The experiments were performed in a bench-scale flow unit feeding a coal/solvent slurry to a 1-l, continuous-stirred tank reactor. In seven out of the nine individual coal comparisons, the high sulfur/high ash coals had higher OIL (C/sub 5/-900/sup 0/F distillate) yields than the low sulfur/low ash coals. The two exceptions were observed with the PSOC 513 (low sulfur/low ash) coal which gave higher OIL yields than PSOC 760 and 607 (high sulfur/high ash) coals. It was suggested that PSOC 513 may have superior maceral properties, leading to higher OIL yields. For the coal mixtures, the OIL and SRC (pyridine-soluble material boiling above 900/sup 0/F) yields were characterized by a simple, unweighted, linear averaging rule in six of the nine cases. In other words, the OIL and SRC yields for the 50:50 mixtures were midway between those for themore » individual coal components. However, three significant exceptions to the linear averaging rule were observed with the PSOC 854/607, 708/607, and 513/666 coal mixtures. A synergistic effect appears to be occurring such that the OIL yield for the mixture was higher than that for either of the two coal components comprising the mixture. For example, the 854/607 coal mixture gave a 25.1% OIL yield compared to 5% for PSOC 854 and 10% for PSOC 607.
