- W327799413 abstract "Abstract : The conflict between the western democratic and the Communist power centers is occurring presently in every facet of interstate contact and in virtually every populated area of the world. Although the United States' awareness of the Communist effort in these so-called developing areas is increasing, Soviet activities in these areas have actually been underway and growing for several decades. Within the past few years Communist China has proclaimed and demonstrated an interest in these same areas. That the United States considers the political independence and economic viability of emerging states vital to our own national interests is shown by the extensive aid and assistance we are providing them. The vast area extending from Mexico and the Caribbean to Tierra del Fuego, euphemistically called Latin America, is one such emerging area. Its proximity to the United States and the closeness of our political and economic relations there make this the emerging area most vital to our interests and security. This paper examines the largest and potentially the most powerful of the Latin states, Brazil. In the view of the author this state is the key to successful United States policy in all Latin America and therefore a prime Communist objective in the hemisphere. The paper further focuses on one of the most effective tools employed by Communists in advancing their aims in Brazil -- nationalism. Capitalizing on the swell of spontaneous nationalistic feelings among Brazilians, the Communists have fostered and supported certain chauvinistic propaganda themes which have been made synonymous with Nacionalismo. These themes have in turn been assimilated by non-Communist groups and politicians pursuing popular support, and the themes have had considerable influence on the formation of major national policies.
