• W327858505 abstract "The overall theme of thesis is examination of relationship between globalization, culture and identity. The study is conducted in City of Cluj (Romania) and students at University there. The problem of thesis lies partly in concurrent relations in locality, partly in cultural elements coming in from outside. Both theoretically and empirically thesis is structured around views and roles of past, present and future - distinct but interacting - features around which identities are constructed. The questions at issue throughout thesis are in what ways constructions of identities are affected by globalization/ transformation, and what differences in constructions depend on. The theoretical chapter starts with dual experience of globalization, introducing concepts of centrifugal vs. centripetal forces of affection and relation between horizontal and vertical process of adaptation. Further in theoretical chapter role and position of culture is discussed in relation state of globalization. Finally, processes through which identity is constructed, is discussed, mainly through concepts of glocalization and deterritorialization of culture. Methodologically a qualitative triangulating approach is used, combining interviews, observations and a qualitative informative survey. The empirical account focuses partly on individuals' context in locality, partly on their interpretations and interactions with it. The conclusions and results of study is that construction of identities - based on interactions between individual and his/ her surrounding - revolve around two factors; conception of past and ideas and hopes for future. The question about what differences between individuals depend on is answered by mainly two factors. One is ethnic conflict between Romanians and Hungarians in area (or relation to the other in general), and factor of economy - issue of having or not having money.
