- W328304854 abstract "This chapter shows that, for many seeds, the acquisition of desiccation-tolerance is an important event in establishing the potential autonomy of the seed, and that maturation drying is a critical event in terminating development, and overcoming those constraints by the maternal environment that maintain seeds in a developmental mode. The developmental mode of the isolated embryo can be reimposed in vitro by manipulations of the culture conditions. There are some obvious limitations to studies on the effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on cultivated embryos, and likewise to those that attempt to correlate peak hormone levels with metabolic events occurring in normally developing seeds on the mother plant. In general, such studies provide little information on the regulatory role of ABA in developing seeds in situ. Imposed desiccation is required for the cessation of development and the promotion of germination and growth of the immature whole seed." @default.
