- W328310508 abstract "Fables, labels, and folding tables: Reflections on the student affairs profession By R.L. Mitchell,1999 task of writing can be as exhausting as walking the floors in the middle of the night with a crying infant trying to soothe the pain while being unable to discover the cause or find a cure so that you can both rest again. task of writing can also be as thrilling and poignant as that same child snuggling into your shoulder relaxing into sleep with a contented sigh. Once the child is comforted, life is good. There is an eternal hope that the meaningful, precious moments between caregiver and child will help diminish from memory the frustrating moments. After reading the previous paragraph, the reader may understand just how difficult and exciting writing may be, but perhaps only a parent can truly appreciate the metaphor. Randy L. Mitchell, in his book, Fables, Labels, and Folding Tables: Reflections on the Student Affairs Profession, succeeds brilliantly in using metaphors such as this to describe what it means to be a student affairs professional, how to excel in student affairs, and how to think. He presents a new way of looking at the ordinary parts of the profession of student affairs. Mitchell is a talented and creative writer who is able, through the use of what appear to be simple stories (fables), guide the reader into the meaning of the profession of student affairs. Many of the humor-filled essays in the book illustrate how theories drive the practice of student affairs. There are references to student development theories and person-environment theories in essays such as Winning Isn't Everything and Pieces of the Past. However, as the author indicates, the essays serve primarily to illustrate the meaning and humanity (p. 3) of the student affairs profession, because although profession has rich theoretical underpinnings, we seem less sure of our philosophical foundations (p. 3). Mitchell's plea is that if we share our stories, we will find the meaning, direction, and value of our work as student affairs professionals. Many of Mitchell's essays are incidents from both his professional and personal life that serve to depict his discovery of meaning in the work he does. He has written this book for potential (graduate students), new, and seasoned professionals. Mitchell does not want this book to be a checklist of skills or a 'how-to' guidebook. Instead, he wants to provide reflections from his experiences, which in turn compel readers to reflect on their own experiences. strength of this book is that through the use of metaphor and reflection, readers can find renewed personal meaning in their work. essays also provide direction on how to be the best student affairs professional possible by discussing labels and folding tables. Mitchell exhorts the reader to pay close attention to labels. He reminds the reader not to get lost in stereotypes in the essays, The Definite Article and Cultural Distinction, and he reminds the reader not to lose yourself in the chapter, The Role of Roles. Ultimately, Mitchell wants the reader to examine the use of labels in communication. Labels should enhance, not hinder, communication and understanding between groups. …" @default.
