- W32850518 abstract "The proposed regulations, in brief, amend existing regulations under Sec. 403(j) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act1 by limiting the inclusion of nutrients in food supplements to eight vitamins and four minerals and prohibiting the inclusion of five vitamins and six minerals2 and by setting forth certain definitions and interpretations of terms which torture science and credibility beyond recognition.3 Finally the regulations set levels of permitted inclusion of added nutrients in food and food supplement products without regard to the statutory mandate regarding safety but with the purpose of extending the authority of FDA to the field of household economics. The proposed regulations will materially minimize decades of scientific progress supporting the value and need for vitamin supplementation based upon conservative fact evaluations of leaders in the field of nutrition. Abundant, safe, and readily available nutritional products have been a touchstone of American enterprise benefiting buyer and seller alike. The regulations are self-defeating in that they will tend severely to curtail incentive for further research work on vitamins because they seem to put a stamp of completion upon vitamin technology, thereby discouraging continued research expenditures. The prime danger inherent in regulations such as this is that they reduce all endeavor to a lower common denominator, ignoring individual needs and providing an artificial average, to the detriment of major units of the population." @default.
