- W328699667 abstract "This chapter discusses techniques of bone biopsy and histomorphometry along with users and indications for bone biopsy in the various metabolic bone disorders. The normal adult skeleton undergoes continual remodeling by a process in which the microscopic portions of trabecular and cortical bone are removed by osteoclasts and are then replaced by new matrix (osteoid), which is laid down and calcified by osteoblasts. The anterior iliac crest has become the standard biopsy site because it is easily accessible and the procedure can be repeated on the opposite side if necessary to assess the effects of therapy. Histomorphometry is the indirect measurement of the size and configuration of three-dimensional structures from a number of representative two-dimensional sections. As most biopsy specimens are taken for histomorphometry, the most significant future prospect must be further moved toward automated measurement of bone volume and turnover and of changes in the microanatomy of cancellous bone." @default.
