- W328897516 abstract "Aristotle and Black Drama: A Theater of Civil Disobedience challenges its readers to apply civil rights’ political philosophy to the arts, specifically theater. This is an important provocation because Patrice Rankine ultimately asserts that current critical dialog surrounding the politics of race (as well as sex, class, and other politically relevant topics) is being had in the theater—and not in the spaces where it, perhaps ought to, inhabit. Rankine attempts to link the tenets of Aristotlelian drama with modern plays that concern the black body. It is asserted in the book that these plays concerning the black body—“black plays”—“riff” on Aristotle’s widely-regarded “rules,” outlined is his text Poetics, regarding theater. There are six features of drama, according to Aristotle. They are the following: character (ethos), story (mythos), thought (dianoia), spectacle (opsis), song (melos), and diction (lexis). The “black” playwrights Rankine references all take an Aristotlelian “rule” and “remix,” or reinterpret it by inserting black bodies into their narratives. Rankin argues that just by virtue of including black bodies on-stage, one disrupts the social order and challenges the collective dianoia of society. Civil disobedience is “an idea and dramatic action...[it] is a performative act, an artistic form” (p. 7, emphasis added) which requires the insertion and movement of bodies—because, as Rankin contends, bodies are “disruptive” (p. xii). Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself said that he and others would “present [their] very bodies as a means of laying [their] case before the conscience of the local and national community” (p. 5), which, according to Rankine, underscores the performative aspect present in engaging in civil disobedience.
