- W329270339 abstract "A global effort understand what works locally. The Age-Friendly Cities project is a global initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is aimed at understanding what characteristics make a city and, conversely, what characteristics constitute barriers age-friendliness. The project began in 2006 and ultimately included thirty-five cities in twenty-two countries from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The only U.S. city represented in the original data collection was Portland, Oregon, although researchers in New York City participated by analyzing the global data and later collecting data in New York City. The WHO's Age-Friendly Cities project was conceived and embraced in June of 2005 at the World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project was developed in response the rapid pace of aging throughout the world, in an effort ensure that societies adequately address the needs of older people and promote their contributions. The goal of the project was to help cities make the most of an ever growing older population (see the project website at www.who.int/ ageing/ -cities/ en/index.html). One intended outcome was a guide that would help cities identify ways in which they could become friendly for those of all ages and abilities. Workings of the Project In May 2006, the WHO and the Ministry of Health in British Columbia convened the initial meeting of collaborating cities in Vancouver, B.C. A common research script and qualitative data analysis guide, the Vancouver Protocol, was created based on the WHO'S approach active aging (www. who.int/entity/ageing/activeageing/en/); contributions from researchers and officials; and a guiding principle that older city dwellers themselves, their caregivers, and service providers must be directly consulted if the characteristics of an city are be known. This protocol is available at no charge on the project's website for use by other cities and communities. The research protocol called for eight focus groups be convened in each study site: four groups with older adults, one with caregivers of older adults unable participate themselves, and three with aging-services providers (voluntary organizations, businesses, and public municipal services). Participants in the focus group were asked identify characteristics that they considered age-friendly and characteristics that represented barriers for older adults, and then make suggestions for improvement in each of eight topic areas: outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; housing; respect and social inclusion; social participation; civic participation and employment; communication and information; and community support and health services. …" @default.
