- W329539897 abstract "* The Mission, Journalism, Ethics, and the World. Joseph B. Atkins, ed. Ames, IA: Iowa State University Press, 2002. 253 pp. $54.99 hbk. This book depicts the role and moral dimensions of international journalism through the eyes of nineteen diverse and often engaging contributors. They reflect on the art and craft-profession of journalism in Africa and the Middle East, South and EastAsia, Europe, and the United States and Latin America. Of the contributors, ten are practitioners, five are educators, three are educator-practitioners (including the editor), and one is a doctoral student. In an opening salvo, Atkins makes clear he has edited a book not of ethical theory but of the human experience of working journalists across the planet. The book brims with descriptions and commentary on the strengths and weaknesses of the media institutions examined by the contributors as well with examples of the moral virtues and ethical lapses of journalists. Most of the practitioners portray an occupation buffeted by the hard and uncertain winds of new technology, the relentless commercialism of media conglomerates, and working conditions that challenge the integrity and viability of journalism. It is commonplace in academe that edited books usually fail attain the consistency and flow of solo-authored volumes. The Mission is no exception. Yet a theme that runs through most, if not all, the contributions is a shared commitment by the best journalists seek and make public the truth. To the credit of the editor and his colleagues, few if any punches are pulled in describing the impediments that laudable but all too frequently elusive or obstructed goal. The stories are contextualized by a chapter in which veteran scholar John C. Merrill portrays the legacy of the eighteenth century Enlightenment as it encounters and is slowly eroded by a world all too prone shrink freedom, erode the authenticity of individuals, and gradually homogenize an occupation whose greatest moments are distinguished by individualism and liberty. The core of the book is a series of individual reports on journalism, country by country. Bernard Nezmah, a self-- described critical intellectual, offers a compelling account of his yesteryears poking fun at the iron fist of Yugo-- communism and of the current difficulty of a newly freed Slovene journalism in reaching genuine political independence. Hungarian researcher Ildiko Kaposi and on-line journalist Eva Vajda depict a transitional, slowly democratizing nation. Although hobbled by unethical practices of the Communist era, a small group of younger reporters and editors with higher, western-derived standards promises to have a redeeming impact on journalism in Hungary. …" @default.
