- W330646275 abstract "Procedure and sampling methods for measuring radioactivity of water organisms are given. Results of determinations for total beta activity of 393 biological samples are shown graphically. Species are grouped, and approximate sampling locations are given. Total beta -activity of biological material of 25l samples, taken at the in- and out-flow of 5 big reservoirs of the Ruhr area, are shown for 9 species. Included is a statistical graph of beta -activity from 60 sludge samples obtained from sewage disposal plants. Results of total beta - activity for sludges collected from river, reservoir, and sewage disposal plants are summarized graphically. It is concluded that it is possible to monitor waters and measure activities through biological materials. Plant and animal organisms show discrete levels of activity. The sludges of the sewage disposal plants showed decreasing beta activity. The activity of plant organism in the out-flow of reservoirs was gener' ally higher compared to that of the in-flow. No activity could be traced to isotope users. With the exception of the activity of K/sup 40/, fission product contribution from fall-out could account for most of the beta -activity.
