- W330699566 abstract "It is March 8, 1978. Eighteen year old Terrance Stanley Fox is recovering in the Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, British Columbia. He has just had his cancerous right leg amputated above the knee. He now knows he will never again play basketball, but a new dream is forming in his mind. That dream is to run the 5,300 mile span across Canada to raise money for charity. Somewhere the hurting must stop, he writes in a letter to a Canadian charity society. The society is not impressed, and his friends are not very encouraging either. Terry Fox must stand on his own and face the nation with his dream. But he does have the support of his parents and his basketball coach who had once told him he was too short to play basketball. Later his coach watched Terry go on to win the Athlete of the Year award at his school. In February of 1979 Terry begins his training. He invents a unique running style of two hops on the left leg and one painful hop on the right leg, repeating the pattern over and over. He begins running half a mile a day. Eight months later, he has worked up to thirteen and a half miles a day. His family and friends manage to raise $3,000 for the expenses of the run. A Canadian charity society then grudgingly pledges its support after observing the determination in Terry. On April 12, 1980, Terry dips his artificial leg in the gray waters of the Atlantic Ocean in St. John's, Newfoundland. Vancouver is 5,300 miles and six months away. The Marathon of Hope has begun. What chances of success would you give this solitary one-legged runner of finishing with only $400 in pledges and dreams of raising as much as $100,000? Slowly he starts his lonely journey through Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, covering 28 to 30 miles a day. In Grand Falls, New Brunswick, he is met by his first big crowd. But while the crowd cheers, the police sneer. They call him a traffic hazard, a public nuisance. Yet he jogs on as the stump of his leg bleeds and blisters. Finally, outside La Chute, Quebec, he is given a break. He is interviewed by a reporter from a local radio station in Seattle, Washington. Momentum begins to build. Slowly Canadians begin watching their television sets nightly for glimpses of the one-legged runner as he jogs on into Canada's wilderness. His determination hardens as sores and cysts form painfully on his stump. But he refuses to see a doctor, knowing he will be told to quit. No such option can exist in Terry Fox's mind. …" @default.
