- W331171615 abstract "__Abstract__The heart is one of the most important organs in the entire human body. Specifically, it isa pump composed of muscle which pumps blood throughout the blood vessels to various partsof the body by repeated rhythmic contractions. The four heart valves determine the pathwayof blood flow through the heart and they normally allow blood flow in only one directionthrough the heart. Moreover, they open or close incumbent upon differential blood pressureon each side. Specifically, the four valves are: the tricuspid valve, the pulmonary valve, themitral valve and the aortic valve. Figure 1.1, represents graphically the heart anatomy. Theblood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. Thereafter, the blood flows through the pulmonary valve to the lungs, where oxygenation takes place.Next, the blood re-enters the heart into the left atrium, through the mitral valve into the leftventricle. Finally, it enters the aorta through the aortic valve. Another important part of theheart is the aortic root which connects the heart to the systemic circulation.Heart valve disease occurs when one or more valves are not functioning properly dueto stenosis and/or regurgitation. Valve stenosis is the disease in which the opening of thevalve is narrowed, while valve regurgitation or insufficiency is the leaking of the valve thatcauses blood to flow in the reverse direction during ventricular diastole. Echocardiography isan excellent tool to evaluate patients with suspected heart valve disease. All four valves candevelop the diseases mentioned above, however, in this thesis we focus on the aortic valvewhich lies between the left ventricle and the aorta." @default.
