- W331463929 abstract "This chapter discusses the host–parasite interaction. Many parasites are extremely specific in their choice of host and can infect animals of only one species. The many species and subspecies of Leishmania proliferate in macrophages. Those, which infect man, can be classified into two groups: species that preferentially infect the skin and others that multiply in the viscera. The metazoa stimulate immunoglobulin E responses and the proliferation of eosinophils and basophils. In addition, infection with intestinal helminths results in a marked proliferation of mucosal mast cells. Immunosuppression is found in most parasite infections; however, it is not characteristic only of them as it also occurs in infections caused by bacteria or viruses. Three immune responses control Plasmodium infections in the mammalian host: one is induced by the sporozoites, the stage that the mosquito injects into the host; another affects the stages within the red blood cells (RBC); and a third affects the gametes, the sexual forms that arise from the RBC stages to infect the mosquito." @default.
