- W331467813 abstract "First Publications of John Clare's Poems. By DAVID POWELL. [Baltimore, MD]: The John Clare Society of North America. (Research Papers on John Clare, 1.) 2004. xvi + 88 pp. $12. Has ever a poet been so drip-fed to the reading public as John Clare? This checklist by David Powell shows (pp. ix-xv) that from 1819 to 2003 (not 2002 as on p. xii), first printings of Clare's poems have been scattered through no fewer than 96 different editions, monographs, annuals, journals, magazines, and even newspapers (but excluding dissertations). Until the recent completion of the authoritative Oxford English Texts edition of the collected poems in nine volumes (of which Powell, of course, is a co-editor), we have had to make do with a trickle of anthologies and studies of varying editorial merit (see my survey of a dozen of them in Studies in Romanticism, Winter 1984, 581-98), and with the dribs and drabs of periodicals, where transcriptions have seldom been rendered meticulously, familiar poems have sometimes been presented as 'hitherto unpublished', titles have often been arbitrarily changed or added, and sources have rarely been supplied. Chaos, in short. The first inventories of Clare's copious ceuvre were Powell's own catalogue of the Clare manuscripts at Northampton in 1964 and Margaret Grainger's of those at Peterborough in 1973. These were supplemented in 1982 by Barbara Rosenbaum and Pamela White's Index of English Literary Manuscripts, vol. IV, with listings of Clare poems in other archives (mostly American), to which a few more were added in 1995 by David Sutton's Location Register of English Literary Manuscripts and Letters. Building on these resources, John Goodridge in 1996 compiled on disk a First-Line Index to the Published and Unpublished Poetry of John Clare, amounting to 3,534 entries; this is now available on the Net at www.johnclare.info, updated 1999, with 3,628 entries. The next advance was the provision of consolidated indexes of titles and first lines in the final volume of the OET edition (to which I shall return), and now these are complemented by Powell's checklist of dates of first publication of each poem, or part thereof. Order out of chaos, at last. But Powell styles this 2004 checklist the 'first edition', suggesting that he envisages a second to accommodate whatever corrections and additions come to hand. Any corrections I could offer here would be merely random-'Athenaeum, 20 August 1837' on p. 21, for instance, should be 1831; 'Anniversary' on p. 26 should be italicized; 'The morning how the sun beguiless' on p. 32 should read 'The morning hour the sun beguiles'; 'Swordy Well' on p. 34 should not be asterisked-but in the matter of additions I can be reasonably systematic. To begin with the oddest omission: Anne Baker's Glossary of Northamptonshire Words and Phrases, 1854, is acknowledged in Later Poems, II, 1107 and 1108 as the source of the two poems given there, yet this source is not cited in Powell's list. I would have thought that Baker qualified as one of those 'miscellaneous works' in category 6 of his sources on p. viii of his Preface. But the most significant omission would have to be Anne Tibbie's edition of twenty bird poems (or extracts) published in 1973 under the title Birds Nest. Only one of them had already been published (in 1924), and their inclusion in this edition predates their appearance in such collections as John Clare's Birds and Northborough Sonnets. Almost as significant an omission is Eric Robinson's edition of Clare's Autobiographical Writings, 1983, which contains five previously unpublished poems (pp. 50-1, 52, 83-5, 86-7, and 88-96) and the full text of one previously published only in part (106-12). Of the many other Clare editions (bearing in mind that several of them contain nothing new), the only ones that seem to have escaped Powell's net are the Tibbies' of the Letters, 1951, which includes 'If there's a weapon fate prepares' (p. 47), Elaine Feinstein's of John Clare: Selected Poems, 1968, which includes several previously unpublished passages from The Parish, and Robinson's of The Parish in full, 1985 (to which Powell himself contributed the notes). …" @default.
