- W331762866 abstract "An automated system capable of simultaneous determination of chloride, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia in about 2 ml of fresh water or wastewater is described. The four compounds are determined using modifications of established colorimetric procedures. Results can be reported at a true rate of five samples per hour with a relative standard deviation at optimum concentrations of less than 2%. Detection limits are 1 ppm CI for chloride and 1, 5, and 5 ppb N for nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia, respectively. Sample pH adjustment is not required from 0.0002 N HESO 4 (pH 3.7) to 0.005 N NaOH (pH 11.2). Fresh water and wastewater samples were analyzed for nitrite and ammonia by the proposed procedure and by the manual sulfanilic-naphthylamine and nesslerization method. Analysis by the student t test showed no significant difference between the paired sets of data (P> 0.5). When potable and wastewater samples were spiked with sodium chloride, potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite, and ammonium chloride and analyzed, average recoveries were 99 to 103%. Chloride, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia determinations constitute a large part of the total analytical work performed in water pollution control and limnochemical laboratories. By adapting available, reliable procedures to multichannel automated analysis and by optimizing the automated system parameters, an automated procedure has been developed for making these four determinations simultaneously in either fresh water or wastewater. T he four tests are independent and can be used with any combination of the concentrations shown in Table I, and their precision and accuracy are comparable with those of current manual (Soldrzano, 1969; American Public Health Association, 1971) or automated procedures (O'Brien, 1962; Strickland and Parsons, 1968; Environmental Protection Agency, 1974). The proposed procedure offers five major advantages: (a) Reaction conditions are optimized for direct application to natural water a nd to wastewater samples. (b) Analysis time for the simultaneous procedure is about 40% of that required for the four single determinations without significant loss of precision and sensitivity. (c) Only about 2 ml of sample are required, and continuous filtration is incorporated into the system with minimum loss of sensitivity and peak separation. (d) Measurement of total inorganic nitrogen (nitrite + nitrate + ammonia N) is independent of possible interconversions of the three nitrogen forms since these are determined simultaneously on the same sample. (e) The procedure can also be used to determine dissolved organic nitrogen as a mixture of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate N after UV irradiation (Manny" @default.
