Price $39.95 (hardcover). Do family members of individuals with mental illness hinder or help the treatment of mental illness? Malcolm MacFarlane argues that family members do provide helpful support and resources that facilitate treatment and that such families can benefit from support and resources that are infrequently offered through approaches to treating mental illness. An individualized, medical-model-type system of treating mental illness continues to permeate mental health centers and hospitals. Family Therapy and Mental Illness presents the case for more fully integrating this system with more contemporary family-oriented treatment models. This volume uses a collection of examples to illustrate that taking a team approach that incorporates multiple spheres or levels of treatment (i.e., individual, family, community) promotes healthy therapeutic outcomes. The contributors to this text work in a range of settings in the United States and Canada. These settings include universities (professors and students), community health centers (directors and practitioners), and private practice. A common theme across the authors is their hands-on experience as clinicians who have worked to bridge the gap between the health care culture and the family systems paradigm. Three major sections organize the book's chapters. The first section lays out the history of mental health treatment in North America and includes the genesis of marriage and family therapy and its inconsistent use by mental health professionals. The authors discuss the research that supports the efficacy of family therapy for treating various ailments and, in some cases, its superiority over individual therapy for treating certain disorders. They also refer to some studies that support integration of individual and family treatments. This particular body of research is limited, in that the rationale for further integration is based mostly on the success of family therapy itself. The authors encourage researchers to study more fully any implementations of programs or models that integrate individual treatment and family therapy. The second section includes chapters that describe family-oriented treatments of traditional populations. These refer to those with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, panic disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic mental illness, and suicidal ideation. The final section focuses on special populations, which refers to those with comorbid substance abuse and psychiatric problems and individuals with brain injuries. …" @default.
