- W33184032 abstract "Some time ago, at DAF Trucks, a research programme was completed which was aimed at enabling the heavy duty truck diesel engine to meet future legislation in the field of noise and gaseous emissions. In the emission part of the programme, known as the “PRIOMO project”, most effort was spent on reducing the NOX emissions, which form the most important component of diesel gaseous emissions. Reduction of hydrocarbon emissions was also given much attention. In the whole programme, the key factor was to accomplish the reduction in gaseous emissions with the least sacrifice in fuel consumption and other engine characteristics. It was concluded that within the framework of a given combustion system and dispensing with the introduction of systems like exhaust gas recirculation, the only factor that could substantially reduce the level of NOX emissions was the injection timing. All other factors investigated have, in comparison, only a minor effect on the NOX level. They can more favourably be used to optimise the engine behaviour, especially the fuel consumption, at a certain emission level, determined by the injection timing. Such factors are the compression ratio, inlet air temperature and pressure, cylinder air motion, rate of fuel injection, etc.In this way, a trade-off pattern was established between emissions and fuel economy for various engine types. It was found that, at least from a fuel consumption point of view, the behaviour of the naturally aspirated engine is still acceptable when setting the engine to meet moderately low emission levels (of the order of 7 to 8 g/hp.h (NOX + CH) according to the U.S. Federal 13-mode cycle). However, with the present combustion system, a stringent emission limit of, say, 5 g/hp.h (NOX + CH) cannot be met by the N.A. engine in an acceptable way. Due to the self-regulating properties of the turbocharger, such an emission limit can be met by turbocharged engines, at the expense, however, of a considerable fuel penalty." @default.
