- W331860963 abstract "In this study a method was developed which made possible the identification of the roles of school system personnel and the assessment of their level of implementation. It was then applied to a significant curriculum project. The method consisted of five stages. The first three stages were concerned with the development, validation, and revision of an idealized model of the project. The key element in this model was a description of an ideal role for each member of the school system who was or should be involved with the project. In the fourth stage an attempt was made to assess the current state of implementation of the roles of school system personnel in terms of the role performance specified in the idealized model. This assessment, illuminative rather than judgmental in nature, gave rise to a set of recommendations designed to enhance the current role performance of school system personnel in the project. Innovations representing considerable investments of time, energy, and money are being continually introduced into school systems. Too often assessment of these innovations is scanty or non-existent. Of the several aspects of an innovation which should be examined, the one usually receiving least attention is the level of implementation. Fullan and Pomfret (1976) indicate that there are many determinants contributing to the satisfactory implementation of an innovation. In this study one of these determinants was examined, namely, the roles of school system personnel who are directly or indirectly involved in a curriculum innovation. A method was developed to identify the specific roles of personnel in an innovation, and to assess the extent to which these roles were being implemented. It involves the use of an idealized model of a fully implemented innovation, against which the current role behavior of school system personnel can be assessed.
