- W332328267 abstract "This chapter discusses immunocytochemistry of pituitary hormones. The primary objective of pituitary immunocytochemistry is the identification of the individual cells or cell types responsible for the production and release of pituitary hormones. Implicit in this goal is the assumption that each hormone is synthesized, stored, and secreted by one distinct cell type, and, conversely, that one cell contains only one hormone. Although it is clear at present that none of these assumptions is completely true; it is also clear that one of the greatest achievements of immunocytochemistry during the past decade has been the nearly total elimination of the past confusion concerning the functional classification and nomenclature of the hormone-producing cells of the adenohypophysis. Thus, there is general agreement at present that immunocytochemical staining with suitable antisera identifies distinct populations of cells, with well-defined light and electron microscopical characteristics, as containing and, therefore, presumably producing each particular hormone. This consensus, and the simplicity and clarity of the functional classification are entirely because of information obtained with immunocytochemical techniques." @default.
