- W333270537 abstract "It is now becoming increasingly clear that a number of proteins, some with very different properties, are synthesized as common multicomponent precursors which are then cleaved. The best documented examples are the tumour virus proteins known as “gag” gene proteins, the pituitary polypeptide hormones ACTH, LPH, MSH synthesized as a common precursor with endorphin, and vitellogenin which is the precursor for egg yolk proteins phosvitin and lipovitellin. The precursor may be proteolytically cleaved in the same cell in which it is synthesized or in a different cell. Translation of precursor messenger RNA in heterologous cell-free systems has helped establish the multicomponent nature of such precursors as well as the order in which the component proteins are arranged. Processing (glycosylation, phosphorylation, lipidation and proteolysis) has been largely studied in vivo or by microinjection of precursor messenger into frog oocytes. The wider implications of synthesis and processing of multicomponent proteins are briefly discussed." @default.
