- W3339903 abstract "A general outline of cell proliferation and development of the characteristic structures and metabolic properties of the brain is presented, using the rat brain as an example. Hormonal and amino acid imbalance and undernutrition during the vulnerable period will distort the normal pattern of development resulting in irreversible structural changes. This altered pattern probably arises from interference with regulated cell proliferation which is required before expression of the differentiated state. This proliferation is dependent on continued protein synthesis as well as a supply of essential amino acids. Brain differentiation can also be irreversibly altered by transient exposure of non-dividing neurones to a normal metabolite at an inopportune moment. Thus normal sexual differentiation of the female hypothalamus is prevented by exposure of the neonatal rat brain to oestradiol. The consequences include altered synaptic connections and changed behaviour. Protein synthesis is specifically required for the normal differentiation. The susceptibility of the developing brain to metabolic alterations is related to its state of metabolic instability, particularly at the level of polyribosomal organisation." @default.
