- W334389472 abstract "Reflecting on his brief tenure as a teacher at a school in Leicestershire in 1732, Samuel Johnson sighed that he did not know whether it was more disagreeable for him to teach, or the boys to learn, the grammar rules.1 Some aspects of the human condition are pretty much immutable, and the inherent aggrava tions of teaching an elementary composition course haven't diminished much since Dr. Johnson served his benumbing stint in a Leicestershire classroom. More recently, one scholar, Jean Sanborn, has even advanced the suggestion that grammar is never taught in the schools, I think little will be lost, proclaim ing instead Piaget's thesis that cognitive capacities evolve natu rally and internally according to their own timetable.2 Whether grammar is the focus or not, the subject matter of basic courses remains as dry and unenticing as it is fundamental and indispensable. The objective of such courses is to inculate a skill, a facility, like playing the piano or juggling rubber balls or executing a grande fuette. The goal can be achieved only through incessant lectures, grammar lessons, re views of principles, and, above all, an unbroken stream of assignments. For both teacher and student, tedium is the nature of the comp class, if only because such classes es chew content, at least as we normally think of it. There is no history, literature, sociology, or art appreciation to be had here?only the endless mental workout aimed at lifting substan dard skills to college-level proficiency. As the class sti fles a yawn (or does not bother to), the teacher stifles an inter nal yawn too. It is this ennui which has inspired the writing across the cur" @default.
