- W33480601 abstract "This chapter describes the hydrogen and methane production through microbial photosynthesis. Hydrogen is widely proclaimed as the fuel of the future. Methane is the most desirable fuel of the present. The rapid depletion of fossil fuel sources of natural gas are threatening to soon make this the fuel of the past. Both gases—hydrogen and methane—have similar desirable properties; they are easily transported and are the least polluting energy sources. The chapter presents some approaches to the production of both gases using microbial photosynthesis. These ideas are based on the results of basic research in biological energy conversion, particularly photosynthesis and on the development of large-scale engineered algal photosynthesis systems. Hydrogen production by photosynthesis is a more direct process than methane production, which requires bacterial fermentations of the algal biomass. The chapter discusses the time course of hydrogen production by the chloroplast–ferredoxin–hydrogenase system. It also describes the two stage system for biochemical biophotolysis." @default.
