- W334820760 abstract "Those of us who have worked with children and young adults have learned that they tend to live in the present. In the main, the events of their lives are perpetuated in the present. Erik Haugaard, who is one of the most talented historical fiction writers of our time and it is apparent from this writing that he is also an astute student of human nature, made an interesting statement recently at an international seminar on children's literature1 which reflects this here-and-now perspective of young people. He emphasized that so many experiences happen to them each day, or each hour for that matter, that they are not free to allow the future to stretch more than a day ahead. And as for the past, everything that has taken place before their birthday is comparable to the academician's prehistoric times and is not considered to be important. According to Mr. Haugaard, to a certain extent, this attitude is true with most adults, too. Adults and children, therefore, tend to divide time into two periods: Before I Was Born (B.B.) and After I Was Born (A.B.). Furthermore, everything that has happened during the A.B. period is declared to be real. It is hard for people (adults and children alike) to consider as reality anything that happened B.B. The more peculiar and archaic the past reality is when compared to the reader's present reality, the more complicated and challenging is the process of reconstitution (for the author and the reader). A historical story can enable the reader to view the past as a reality, experience it vicariously but personally thus giving it significance and relevance, if in the writing of this kind of fiction the author achieves an interaction of three basic elements: a) A precise description of the past but not to the point where it amounts to a" @default.
