- W336043800 abstract "The chapter describes the motion of particles belonging to a single-j shell in terms of classical orbitals. It discusses the effects of rapid rotation and pairing correlations and compares the results with quantum mechanical orbitals. In the spectroscopy of rapidly rotating nuclei, the high-j intruder shells play a distinguished role because the particles belonging to these shells can easily align their angular momentum along the axis of rotation. The physics of the high-j shells is very important for the understanding of the excitation spectrum of collectively rotating nuclei. The chapter also highlights some basic properties of a high-j shell in a rotating nucleus, mainly in terms of classical orbitals. The classical orbitals are very suitable for interpreting the quantum mechanical excitation energy spectrum of a particle in a single-j shell. They not only allow understanding of a general classification of the excitations in terms of RAL-, DAL-, and FAL-states but also provide reasonable estimates of quantities such as <Jx> and <Jz> and of the mixing of particle and hole components. The classical orbitals also provide quite detailed information about the way in which pairing correlations modify the excitation spectrum at different excitation energies and rotational frequencies. This information is very useful when trying to find criteria for whether a particular system is subject to important pairing correlations or not." @default.
