- W336423751 abstract "Publisher Summary Vertebrates and invertebrates differ in many aspects of the overall morphology of their olfactory apparatus, yet they share a few fundamental mechanisms through which they are able to sense chemical environments. An important distinction between vertebrate and insect olfactory systems is the segregation of insect olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) and their support cells into distinct olfactory hairs (sensilla) on both antennal and maxillary palp structures. Olfactory-stimulated signal transduction is mediated by G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) pathways involving the synthesis of second messengers, such as cyclic AMP (cAMP) and/or inositol 1,4,5- triphosphate (IP3). Several proteins that are involved in fundamental aspects of olfactory signal transduction are common in both vertebrate and invertebrate systems. These include components of the biochemical machinery necessary for chemoelectric signal transduction, such as olfactory-specific G-proteins, adenylate cyclase, cyclic nucleotide, and IP3-gated channels. The chapter also discusses the future aspects of olfactory signaling that will be centered on understanding the current role of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in olfactory signal transduction pathways of insects." @default.
