- W336769934 abstract "Autism is a neurological disorder that presents itself differently in each person who is diagnosed with it. It is characterized by developmental delays in areas of speech, communication, social skills, and sometimes detachment from reality. It is a spectrum disorder, which means there is a range of severity of symptoms that any one person diagnosed with autism might have. I can't describe how each student diagnosed with autism would benefit from college, but, I can tell you my experiences and strategies which helped me succeed in college. My name is Brett Schmidt, and I am a college student with Autism. My greatest challenge of having autism is communication. When I first applied to Briarcliffe College, I was given an e-mail address to the Campus Portal. I had to train myself to look at the portal frequently for communication and information. At the beginning of each semester, I e-mailed each of my professors to introduce myself and inform them about my testing accommodations. Then, I checked the portal to make sure that the professors received my messages. On the first day of the semester, I picked up textbooks and purchased three-ring binders for each class as well as a planner. I asked the professors if there would be class notes available. If so, they are usually posted on the portal. I print out syllabi and class notes from the portal and put them in three-ring binders. When readings are assigned, I like to take notes, as 1 go for facts as well as vocabulary, and print them. I also take notes on class discussions because these are important areas to study for quizzes and tests. If I have questions or need extra help understanding something, then I would utilize access to the professor's office hours. I learned how to use the portal to make appointments ahead of time in order to be sure that the professor could meet with me. Being in a smaller class setting makes it easier to participate and ask questions.Over the four years, it is important to have a go-to person either through the Learning Center or Office of Accommodations. 1 took full advantage of testing accommodations. I always sit up front so that I can hear and reduce distractions. Depending on the professors, I realize when it is a good time to ask questions either before, during, or after class.Over the years, I have become more confident about speaking in front of the class. Writing projects were and are challenging as I move up the ranks in my degree program. I always use the Learning Center, as well as professors, to monitor my progress. Often times, many revisions are handled properly. It is helpful for the professors to give real life examples on how to use the materials. These professors showed me respect and were very patient with me.There are several strategies professors should use when working with students who have autism. It is helpful to provide a student with class notes prior to the class. That makes it easier to pay attention to the material instead of franticly taking notes. It is helpful to emphasize and repeat the most important material. Remind students to take advantage of extra help. It can improve students' confidence with the materials presented.I recommend students make their own flashcards to study vocabulary words because these terms can be very helpful for quizzes and exams. Professors should give students tips and strategies on how to type essays, such as developing outlines, and the opportunity to hand in rough drafts to be sure they are understanding the assignments, as well as for editing process. They should create practice problems to see how much they know about the materials. Professors should explain the steps to each problem and go over those problems. They should also advise students to look up words they don't know by looking in the dictionary and putting them on flashcards.According to Aspergersyndrome.org, here are some tips for teachers of high-functioning students with Autism:1. …" @default.
