The emphasis is on the word overview, as music collections in Croatia do not exist as independent entities. Varying in form and size, they are kept within various institutions, primarily within the archive, library, and museum communities. Music collections are also kept by some performing societies, such as art societies, and by some scientific, educational, and private institutions. Finally, of no less importance, are the music sources stored in archives and libraries of monasteries and churches, as they comprise some of the oldest and most valuable music artefacts, which hold great importance not only for the religious community but for the nation as a whole. This short overview of the most important music collections in Croatia will also include a current status report on the ongoing work of arranging and cataloguing of the music sources in various music collections. (2) The following distribution is devised according to the type of institution comprising music materials, and collections included are those which stand out in content or size. Through the foundation of the Institute of musicology at the Music Academy, very closely related to the Department of musicology at the Music Academy, a long-term strategy of inventorying, consolidation, and cataloguing of sheet music collections was initiated. Since 1980, consolidation is conducted through a scientific project named Sredivanje i obradba glazbenih izvora u Hrvatskoj (Arranging, Cataloguing and Elaboration of Music Sources in Croatia),(3) which is headed by the Institute for the history of Croatian music at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Data has been collected through surveys and field research on the types of music sources and locations where they are kept. (4) The project is on-going and supports the idea of a systematic consolidation of music collections. Preliminary classification has been established, based on the nature of music material found in various locations. Thus, unofficially, the holdings are divided into three classification groups: 1. Archives of international importance 2. Archives of national importance 3. Archives of local importance According to this classification, there are 38 music archives and collections on the list of items of international importance. Catalogues of the music sources from the select music collections are continuously consolidated and published. (5) As part of the cultural and artistic life, music collections in Croatia were developing under a great influence of historical circumstances. Often disunited, Croatian territories were under different political, economic and consequently, cultural and artistic influences. Thus, for example, Croatian coast and the coastal cities, imbued with the influence of the Italian cultural centres. The northern part of Croatia was politically and culturally tied to the countries of the Central Europe since it was part of the Austro-Hungary Empire. Accordingly, it was under the influence of the Central-European artistic trends on one hand, and Italian influences on the other. Apart from the administrative ties, other strong ties existed between Croatian coastal areas and Venice, the cultural centre at the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century representing a lasting testimony to a lively cultural and artistic exchange. Venice was a hub of cultural and academic activity where the Croats would go to obtain various types of education. Since no single printing house for music material existed in Croatia until the first half of the eighteenth century (6), it is of no surprise that in the sixteenth century, the majority of music material was printed in Venice. (7) The earliest books were printed with the assistance of the church circles. Those were handbooks intended for liturgy, therefore, the earliest development and collecting of music manuscripts, incunabulae, and bequests is closely tied to the church life, or more specifically, to monasteries. …" @default.
