- W337302645 abstract "Many Americans once believed that technology coupled with man's scientific creativity could solve most of the problems confronting the United States. Within the past decade increased pollution, fuel shortages, and dwindling food supplies have made people more aware that the marriage of science and technology is one that has created complex situations that will have far reaching personal and societal implications. The alternative solutions to these difficult situations may call for a dramatic reevaluation of both individual and societal values. Americans, as well as others in the world's population, have begun to realize that science and technology are both the solutions to many problems and the causes of many more. The interrelatedness of science and technology has important implications for social studies and science classrooms. In the past social studies and science have essentially gone their own way; each exploring topics from a particular point of view. In most instances, the social studies classroom has served as the forum for the discussion of controversial issues and value questions. Social studies literature abounds with models, strategies, and materials for focusing on values and policy decisions. The science classroom, on the other hand, has served primarily as a means of teaching scientific inquiry and a more up-to-date body of scientific knowledge with little effort to discuss value questions." @default.
