- W33753442 abstract "Masculinity is not found in a reading unless you go looking for it. Even when the search is on, what is discovered is not so much masculinity as a monolithic entity, but masculinities, and each masculinity tends to clothe itself in the garments of normality. Reading for masculinity is a process of taking off the ensemble of dominance and looking at the way the constitu ent parts fit together. In Conrad this means taking into account both the representation of masculinity within the evolving genre of the novel and its changing social construction at the turn of the century. The cultural domin ance of the mid-Victorian, realist novel had passed by the 1890s. Instead a plurality of forms: horror, romance, sensationalist fiction and the increasing importance of the short story are distinctive in that decade, the period of Conrad's earliest works. It is almost as if the older novel forms were no longer able to contain the different chronotopes and forms of time which Bakhtin sees as its defining characteristic.1 At the same time, this new diversity should be seen in the context of the new, emergent social identities which were making themselves known as voices within and outside the genre of the novel. It has been argued that it was the 'New Woman' fiction of writers like Sarah Grand and George Egerton that helped to fragment the mid-Victorian, realist perspective which represented masculine hegemony as the norm; but Conrad's novels are also contem poraneous with the emergence of new, gendered subjectivities in the sexological work of writers like Havelock Ellis as well as in the experi mental writing of Edward Carpenter's Towards Democracy and Olive" @default.
