- W337889444 abstract "Who will be the faculty of the future? was the question posed to the members of the Task Group on Recruitment and Retention of Nurse Educators, one of several task groups developed as a result of the NLN's reorganization into four advisory councils. The Nursing Education Workforce Development Advisory Council (NEWDAC) established this particular group to develop strategies to recruit and retain an adequate supply of qualified nurse educators. Early in the process, it became clear that the first step must involve the identification of factors that influence the recruitment and retention of faculty: * What draws individuals to the faculty role? * What sustains them in their role? * Which factors have a negative influence on the decision to remain in the faculty role? In the course of three conference calls, one face-to-face meeting, and numerous e-mail interactions, the group developed a survey instrument and made plans to analyze the data. The tool was piloted during the Faculty Development Institute sponsored by the NLN and the Villanova University College of Nursing in June 2002. It was then disseminated to all participants at the 2002 Education Summit. A focus group was conducted during the Summit to ascertain faculty perspectives on five questions: * What are the key issues with regard to recruitment of nurse educators? * What are the key issues with regard to the retention of nurse educators? * What is most satisfying about the role of the nurse educator? * What is least satisfying? * What marketing strategies would be most effective in recruiting young nurses into the faculty role? Follow-up telephone interviews based on these questions were conducted with individuals who indicated a willingness to discuss their survey responses further. Initial results from 305 respondents to the survey revealed the following: 97 percent were employed full time; 69 percent were at the assistant professor rank and above; 46 percent held tenure; and 68 percent had been in the faculty role for longer than 11 years. Forty percent of the sample held faculty positions in associate degree programs, and 41 percent were employed in baccalaureate and higher degree programs, including specialized colleges of nursing and health and tribal colleges. Ninety percent indicated that they had completed a master's degree in nursing, while only 39 percent had completed a doctorate in nursing or a related field. One percent of the respondents were male and 97 percent were Caucasian; the other 3 percent described themselves as African American or Hispanic/Latino. Respondents were asked to indicate which of 10 factors influenced their decision to become a faculty member and their decision to stay in their current job. They were also asked what might make them think about leaving their job. Working with students influenced the decision to become a faculty member of 72 percent of the respondents; for 81 percent, working with students influenced their decision to remain in their current position.
