- W338227548 abstract "This environmental assessment for the National Social Action Project for Sierra Leone describes the mitigating measures to be used to manage the negative and social impacts of community-based demand driven initiatives. Activities associated with shelter and housing rehabilitation which generate waste will be disposed of in such a way as to minimize the pollution of the land, water resources, and the air. Implementing a waste management plan; and land degradation, water pollution, and air pollution control programs; and public education will reduce possible increases in respiratory disorders, ailments, and water-borne diseases. Implementing the SHARP program can also help mitigate impacts on water resources. Reforestation drives through community tree-planting activities will help restore and mitigate land impacts. On-site biodiversity loss, including impacts on flora, fauna, critical habitats, and forest reserves can be minimized by proper siting of infrastructure. Solid waste disposal practices will reduce the transmission of infectious diseases, as well as the threat of injury to people and animals from various materials. Keeping fill areas damp, covering trucks carrying dust, and monitoring air quality will lessen dust associated with preparing the earth for building a foundation. Open pits should be marked and the pits covered and rehabilitated when no longer in use. Targeted groups will be educated on safety regulations to prevent chemical accidents and poisoning. Farmers and gardeners will be educated to reduce the creation of pools of stagnant water by improving canal and channel construction. National and international regulations on pesticide use will implemented, and the use of organic fertilizers and herbicides will be promoted through training workshops and demonstrations. Enforcing national and local planning and environmental regulations will reduce impacts on land topography and on water bodies caused by erosion and siltation as well as the aesthetic quality of surrounding areas." @default.
