- W338670772 abstract "Publisher Summary Paillard correctly mentions that “Motor theories have long played an important role in the epistemology of perception and have supplied many centuries with philosophical controversies.” What he does not mention, however, is that some of these theories were very influential at their time but nevertheless subsequently completely disappeared from the theoretical scene. This latter state of affairs provokes, of course, the embarrassing question: Why a motor theory again where previous ones have so obviously failed? The answer to this question requires a closer look at the essence of the motor theories from then and at the core of Paillard's motor theory from now. Paillard's motor theory is clearly compatible with the views of contemporary introspective perception psychology. Behind, and at the basis of, his theory is the neuro-anatomical and neuro-physiological given of massively parallel processing of nervous messages in a great number of anatomically separate (visual, auditory, tactile) maps or space structures. Given the philosophical psychoneural identity theory, that holds that what one perceives is a (sub)set of brain states, this is taken to entail that the spatial structure of the maps and structures is sufficient to ensure that spatiality is perceived." @default.
