- W339927444 abstract "The genus Gossypium has 50 species, of which only four are cultivated commercially. India is the only country that grows all four cultivated species of cotton, with the majority of the cotton cultivated area being used for Gossypium hirsutum. The country has done pioneering work in developing hybrids of cotton, and presently, 73.62% of cotton cultivated area is occupied by Bt cotton hybrids of G. hirsutum. The conventional breeding program has resulted in development of numerous location specific cultivars, diverse genetic stock, and development of cultivars with several useful traits against biotic and abiotic stress. However, the spectacular increase in yield coupled with significant reduction in insecticidal spray has made the Bt technology highly popular in India. The technology has also brought, along with major issues such as resurgence of minor pests like mirid and mealy bugs, issues related to Bt seed purity. No symptoms of resistance development of bollworm to Bt gene has been observed since its cultivation from 2002. Organized scientific research for development of genotypes with wider adaptability, superior fiber quality, application of biotechnology, development of farmer usable kits, etc. has been discussed under future thrust for cotton improvement in the country." @default.
