- W34003821 abstract "Number, type, and intensity of fear reported by 1,776 third and sixth graders from different areas of the country, were explored by sex, socioeconomic level, grade level, community location, race, and sibling position. Subjects rated a check list of 71 fears, comprising 11 fear types including drug and ecological fears, on an intensity scale ranging from never to almost always have this fear. Mean number and intensity of total and types of fears held by each sample group were calculated from coefficients derived from the general linear hypothesis form of analysis of variance and were analyzed within the Adlerian theoretical framework. Types of fears were ranked for each group by frequency and intensity. Following are some of the significant findings. Girls reported more fears and greater fear intensity than boys, with the exception of fears of the future. Lower socioeconomic children in general reported more intense fears than upper socioeconomic children, although this was not always true for boys. Fears of super natural and natural phenomena and personal relations were felt more often and more intensely by lower socioeconomic than upper socioeconomic children. Sixth graders held more fears but not more intense fears than third graders. Political fears were more common among sixth graders; whereas, third graders indicated more and greater intensity of drug fears and also more intense fears of natural phenomena. Considering specific fear types, non-whites reported more, and more intense fears of supernatural phenomena than whites. Non-whites also reported more intense fears of natural phenomena and fewer fears of personal relations than whites. Difference among community locations were found for both number and intensity of fears, but more similarity than difference was obtained among sibling positions. Drug, ecological, and political fears were strongly held by all groups, a finding which differs from previous research." @default.
