- W341089217 abstract "THE STARGARDT AUCTION OFFERED TWO BEETHOVEN ITEMS WITH TOTALLY DIFFERENT OUTCOMES. Estimated to go for around 25,000, the first was a brief note to Gustav Dollinger (1774-1835) that apologized for a late arrival of a book due to health problems (Forgive the late arrival of the book, for a considerable time my health has been in an almost critical state, this is the reason for the delay). It bears the Anderson letter number 1249 and the Brandenburg number 1040. Emily Anderson, who was not able to see the autograph, dated it from 1823, while Sieghard Brandenburg places it in the period 1816/17. The twenty-five words in the body of the letter sold for 34,000 plus the premium, amounting to $45,350, or $1,814 per word. Not many personalities command such a rate! The fate of the second lot was in stark contrast. It consisted of a contemporary copyist's score of the violin and pianoforte parts for the first movement and the pianoforte part for the third movement of the Violin Sonata in D Major, Opus 12, no. 1. With a modest estimate of 250, no one was tempted and it was bought in. Stargardt's auction served as a prelude to Sotheby's in London on May 22. Eight Beethoven lots were offered, and the first one completely overshadowed all others. It was a rare full score of the Ninth Symphony, Opus 125, offered by Sotheby's as lot 16 with an eighteen-page introductory packet carefully and skillfully prepared by the auction house. Included were seven color facsimiles of sample pages and a detailed description of each section. The score is a 575-page document prepared by two copyists to be used by the engraver in producing the final copy. What made it especially valuable was the editing inserted by Beethoven on practically every page, done in typical Beethoven fashion. Not only did Beethoven make annotations, correcting wrong notes and dynamic markings, but he also made corrections to the music by pasting leaves with changes on them overlaid on the original versions. This procedure resulted in two versions of Beethoven's thoughts on some segments of the score; the first ideas, still covered up, have yet to be revealed. These will only come to light when the overlaid pages are carefully removed. The sales packet provides a perfect adjunct to the manuscript itself. This sale received worldwide coverage in the press and interest was heightened tremendously. Sotheby's did not hesitate to place the estimates at £2,000,000-3,000,000. I telephoned Stephen Roe, head of the manuscript department at Sotheby's, to gather some details about the bidding. The opening bid from the floor was £1,500,000 but quickly rose to £1,900,000 via a phone bid, which brought the hammer down. Including the premium charged by Sotheby's, the buyer paid a total of £2,133,600 ($3,542,000). …" @default.
