- W341774306 abstract "Luminosities of the FIR continuum of dust and of four atomic and ionic lines in our Galaxy are estimated and their origin is discussed. The corresponding emission from external galaxies observed today is discussed and compared to our Galaxy. So far FIR observations of external galaxies relate mostly to pathological cases with central bursts of star formation (e.g. M82, NGC253) or with luminous central sources (as e.g. the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068) or with very compact central synchrotron sources (such as the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC1275, many QSO’s and BL Lac objects). Only one normal Sc Galaxy, M51, has been mapped to date in the FIR continuum. And only four FIR lines of two elements (S and O) have been detected to date in two galaxies (M82 and NGC1068). It is to be expected, however, that IRAS will detect the FIR dust continuum of most of the nearby spiral galaxies, while the observation of compact, self-absorbed synchrotron sources will become the domain of the new generation of large mm/submm telescopes. The need for a European astroplane is stressed if Europe wants to reach and stay at the forefront of FIR astronomy. The potential for future space applications is stressed of new technologies such as carbon fiber reinforced epoxy as lightweight material for precision telescopes or heterodyne radiometers for spectroscopy longward of ~100 μm." @default.
