- W34180868 abstract "Publisher Summary Experimental work plays an important part in building and civil engineering research, and it demands accurate observation and recording. The cine film is a very useful medium for studying and recording many phenomena involving movements, and it is frequently used in the work of the Building Research Station. These applications may be divided into two categories: (1) straightforward film records of all kinds of experimental and constructional work—made at the normal sound film speed of 24 frame/sec and (2) the use of special photographic techniques to extend the range of human observation or to facilitate recording and measurement. This chapter discusses these two categories. Sometimes, it is necessary to employ special techniques to secure a satisfactory film record—either to facilitate study and analysis or to enable the relevant movement to be readily perceived. The best known of these techniques is to vary the speed of the camera. In the well-known high-speed cinematography, the camera is run much faster than the projector so that the time of the movement is suitably magnified when the film is to be projected; this enables very rapid movement to be studied. By means of time-lapse, it is possible to obtain a continuous record of an entire experiment lasting a considerable time. This can be useful in carrying out fire tests on building materials and investigations on children's playground equipment. Time-lapse is also used for instrument reading during experiments of long duration. The chapter discusses the uses of time-lapse photography and film analysis." @default.
