[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] When I undertook my research for Electric Folk in England (2005) in the 1990s, the topic was not yet fully accepted within ethnomusicology. At the same time, it was obvious that one single book would not be able to cover the complex, hybrid genre in its entirety, as it has been embedded. into so many different personal accounts of performers, audiences, and journalists. Published in 2012, Transtbrming Folk: Innovation and Tradition in English Folk-Rock by Robert G. H. Burns adds a further perspective to the discourse. Burns is Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Transforming Folk combines the author's experiences as a performer in the scene (among others, as session bass guitarist with Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span) with a rich theoretical analysis from ethnomusicology, cultural studies, and media studies. Approaching English folk-rock from the perspectives of rock music, the music industry, and world music, Burns portrays this genre particularly within a modern context by addressing focal issues like revivalism, nationalism, and cultural branding. Given the strong theoretical edge of the book, Transforming Folk might not be the first choice for readers looking for an entertaining selection of anecdotes, as narrated in Rob Young's Electric Eden, or looking for an introduction to the history of the genre that emerged in the late 1960s/early 1970s. While the central readership for this book will be within an academic context, it should nevertheless be of broader interest - not least because it explores a progressive rock perspective, drawing attention to groups, such as the Strawbs, Gryphon, and Lindisfarne to which previous studies have given less consideration. Burns's study also addresses developments since 1980 in more detail, elaborating in particular on the situation of folk-rock within the framework of contemporary world music--developments that have rarely been discussed within academic and journalistic discourses before this publication. Yet the distinguishing feature of Transforming Folk remains its comprehensive analysis of the genre through the lenses of various theoretical cultural models. On a broader level, the study is held together by the recurring discussion of the three issues of continuity, variation, and selection, which were at the core of Cecil Sharp's folk music definition and were also taken up by the ICTM. …" @default.
