- W343256633 abstract "This chapter discusses the normal structure and function and associated pathologies of the human tongue. The mammalian tongue is very well developed, extremely mobile, and a multipurpose structure. The mammalian tongue was evolved out of the reptilian tongue by an increase in musculature and papillary structure. A median elevation in the floor of arch I, the tuberculum impar, is seen but appears to make little contribution to the developing tongue. Two lateral lingual swellings of the first arch form the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. This part of the tongue is interlaced with intrinsic muscles that add to the increased thickness and mobility of the tongue As in the other classes, the mammals also witness diversity within the species. Bats and honey possum have extremely long tongues that aid in obtaining the nectar upon which they feed. Mammals that feed on ants, insects, and termites, such as the anteater, have long vermiculae-shaped tongues. The nectar and insect feeders may have tongues as long as their entire body. The dog has a tongue that functions as a thermoregulator because of poorly developed sweat glands. In general, the carnivores have a mobile and well-formed lingual structure but the herbivores evidence the best developed tongue for grabbing herbage. The mammalian tongue is a major bearer of taste buds and highly developed salivary glands" @default.
